Build a life that reflects what truly matters
Sit down with your spouse and write it down: what's really important to you two as a family? Can you put it in ten bullet points or less? Be terse or verbose, whatever speaks to you.
Revisit the document a couple of times; and then at the start of each calendar year.
(a) Budget Intensely: Embrace a scarcity mindset. Don't lose your life working all to pay for two Starbucks coffees every day (as much as they are delicious). Save those pennies for experiences that truly help you grow. Use budgeting software like YNAB, Mint, or Personal Capital.
(b) Manage Your Retirement Money: Plot your trajectory towards financial independence—the point where you don't need to work anymore for money. You might just work for fun, or you might just choose to spend time with your kids. Revisit your retirement trajectory each year.
